| Martina Buckley • Cork, Ireland |
Martina Buckley in Connemara, 2002
Martina's work moves beyond the organic and into the worldly. Her paintings appear to be made of the earth. Though her work is defiantly abstract, sometimes it hints to life itself. Martina’s work, is not figurative as it does not depict anything outside. Her use of rich luminous colors transcends her media to conger unique worlds in her painting.

"All of the paintings are inspired by my youth in Cork, Ireland. I have studied the sea, the weather, my Mother, my sisters and brothers, Father, things friends said to me, games we played and our Irish domestic traditions. The paintings are memories of these experiences trapped in the mind’s eye. I am not concerned about being accurate in depicting these elements; I am driven to create the emotions trapped in each one of these memories. These memories, all of them are bittersweet, I like that. My feelings are resolved in these paintings and they bring me happiness and peace. They are the details of childhood brought to the surface when you travel back to a place from the past. The smells and sounds remind you of your feelings at that age. This is the concern of all my paintings." - Martina Buckley |
